A Community-led and Cooperative Housing Roadshow by Cohousing Scotland - from Kirkwall, Orkney Isles to Inverkeithing, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Lenzie.
Cohousing is an ‘intentional group of neighbours’, who live in their own homes but share some facilities. Residents come together to design, fund and manage their community, usually in groups of 10 to 40 households. The key principles are:
- Creating a balance between privacy and community - individual homes and a common house with shared facilities
- Designed to encourage social interaction - developments are kept relatively small and cars etc shared
- Co-designed with the members - who design everything, from buildings to children’s parties and the food they grow
- Residents are the decision-makers - these are often based on consensus, helping ensure everyone is on board
- Cohousing communities are inclusive and part of the wider community - often hosting local activities in the Common House.
We shall consider different forms of Community-led and Cooperative Housing and explore how these options might be established as a middle way between social housing and housing built for profit.
